How Twitter has Changed the World...

The recent boom of the social networking/micro-blogging site Twitter has created quite a buzz. As a website that was unheard of only a few months ago, to one of the most popular social networking sites on the web today, Twitter has had an insanely fast rise to the top. Its sudden popularity among my friends and the general public has sparked my interest in the topic, which is why I have chosen to do a term project on Twitter and everything related to it.

I first heard about Twitter during the recent presidential election. While running, President Obama utilized the website to give updates on his campaign and what they were doing. Having such a high profile using the site brought Twitter a good deal of traffic and attention. Since then, it has become a household tool for numerous celebrities and even just general people. As a much less time consuming form of blogging, it is easy to let people know what you are doing, without spending hours doing it.

As a cyclist racing in Europe this past summer, I was heavily exposed to Twitter because many of my teammates would "Tweet" many times a day to keep their friends, families, and fans up to date on their lives. While I was not a user until recently, I was always intrigued by the fact that people want to know such quirky detailed information about other people, such as "Trix aren't just for kids…..I'm craving trix right now" -Rolay117. It is for these reasons that I have decided to research the topic in more depth, and learn about the site and all of the applications associated with it.
